It is time for Victoria to follow the three Australian Labor states (WA, NSW and Queensland) which have banned the recreational shooting of native waterbirds. Your involvement will help stop this brutal and unsustainable activity.

Dear Premier Brumby,

Climate change is threatening the survival of many Australian species. Native waterbird numbers have dropped dramatically and the recreational shooting of these birds is no longer sustainable.

At this time of water and climate crisis, it is irresponsible for the Victorian Labor government to perpetuate antiquated legislation that promotes the shooting of native birds purely for recreational purposes.

After two consecutive years of moratoriums on duck shooting, it is now time for Victoria to follow the state Labor governments in WA, NSW and Queensland, who banned this brutal activity on cruelty grounds. If it was cruel in these states, it is also cruel in Victoria.

Since the 1980s, public opinion has changed and a Morgan Research Poll in October 2007 showed that 75% of Victorians (across the political spectrum) now want this activity stopped permanently. The percentage jumped to 87% once respondents were made aware that the activity had been banned in three other states, that waterbird numbers were down by 82% across eastern Australia and that one in four birds fly away wounded.

Premier Brumby, it is time to stop wasting my taxes by pandering to a small number of shooters and propping up such a cruel, unpopular and unsustainable activity.

The recreational shooting of native waterbirds must be permanently banned now.
